VANCOUVER, June 21 - Media representatives are invited to attend MoreSports 2008 World Mini Soccer Jam, which includes a community festival, in Vancouver. MoreSports programs reduce barriers for kids who don’t usually play sports because of cost, gender, cultural issues, transportation, or fear of the competitiveness in some organized sports. More than 1500 kids, on 150 teams, from mini soccer programs across East Vancouver as well as six teams from its newly implemented pilot project in Burnaby will attend. Parents, volunteers, partners and sponsors will bring the total attendance to between 3000 and 3500 people. Photographers are guaranteed lots of action to shoot and interview opportunities with MoreSports families are available.

In addition, the Vancouver Foundation will be making a funding announcement in support of MoreSports at 12:30 during the photo op session.

MoreSports: "Giving All Kids a Chance to Play"

  • MoreSports programs involve children from kindergarten to Grade Seven.
  • MoreSports began as a collaborative initiative of three Vancouver inner city neighbourhoods in 1999. It provides sustainable sport and physical activity opportunities for children, particularly those who typically do not participate in sports.
  • Today, more than 3,600 kids regularly participate in sports and physical activity programs, such as soccer and basketball, and the program has grown to seven hubs encompassing 16 Vancouver neighbourhoods, primarily on the East Side.
  • In January, MoreSports began a pilot project in Burnaby to take the delivery model to other areas with high need. Burnaby has six MoreSports teams, with about 100 kids, from Stride and Kitchener Elementary schools.
  • MoreSports Co-presents the Jam with the Vancouver Whitecaps and BC Soccer. They with multiple sponsors, partners, parents, and volunteers sustain the programs. These cooperative efforts make MoreSports annual soccer jam a true community festival and celebration of soccer in Vancouver.
