Great Lesson Learned from Volunteering!

On Saturday June 6, Midtown Tigers, in collaboration with Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Mount Pleasant Elementary School hosted our annual “Celebrate Mount Pleasant Day”. However, this year was very special due to 5 incredible young men who chose to spend their Saturday volunteering.

Matthew Stein, a grade 6 student and the Project Leader, decided after reading and hearing about MoreSports that their group would volunteer 2 hours of their time and write a report about their experience for their class project.

For their project, the Midtown Tigers arranged for the boys to help referee the Kindergarten and Grade 1 kids. Although the boys were a little apprehensive in the beginning, they soon found their groove and were having just as much fun as the kids.

Even though the Kindergarten kids were a little disorganized, we still had a blast” quoted Matthew Stein, Joshua Weidman, Kai Balin, Max Clark and Jason Morris.

As well, Matthew and his classmates: Joshua Weidman, Kai Balin, Max Clark and Jason Morris all collected used sports equipment from their neighborhoods and sporting good stores. Items collected include softball gloves, helmets, soccer cleats, hockey sticks, and badminton rackets which will be used in our fall programs.

Through this process we learned a lot of things that we want to share with our classmates. We never knew that playing soccer with Kindergarten and Grade 1 children would be so much fun. We realized they were so enthusiastic, respectful, co-operative and loving that we had the best time. We never knew that volunteering for our community could be so much fun and would make us happy helping others. When we first got this project we thought this would be a total drag but once we got into it we could not be more excited to volunteer” quoted by Matthew Stein, Joshua Weidman, Kai Balin, Max Clark and Jason Morris.

Matthew and his classmates initially volunteered as part of their class project and we sincerely hope they learned a valuable life lesson that will instill a good foundation for their future as leaders in the community. We were greatly impressed and appreciative of their time, effort and interaction with the kids. They are terrific young men.
